MEURTHE-ET-MOSELLE Geography
Meurthe-et-Moselle is part of the region of Lorraine and is surrounded by the departments of Meuse, Vosges and Moselle, in the region of Alsace by the department of Bas-Rhin and by the nations of Luxembourg and Belgium.
Its extends from north to south for 130 kilometers and between 7 and 103 kilometers from west to east.

Meurthe-et-Moselle is a department in the Lorraine region of France, named after the Meurthe and Moselle rivers.
Meurthe-et-Moselle River: The Meurthe is a river in north-eastern France, right tributary to the river Moselle. Its source is in the Vosges mountains, near the Col de la Schlucht in the Vosges département. It gave its name to the present French département Meurthe-et-Moselle and the former (before the change in the Franco-German border after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870) département Meurthe. It flows into the river Moselle in Pompey near Nancy.
Moselle River: The Moselle (French: Moselle, German: Mosel, Luxembourgish: Musel) is a river flowing through France, Luxembourg and Germany. It is a left tributary of the Rhine, joining it at Koblenz. A small part of Belgium is also drained by the Mosel through the Our.
Its name comes from the Latin Mosella, meaning the "Little Meuse" (Mosa in Latin). The river gave its name to two French départements: Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle.
MEURTHE-ET-MOSELLE History
Meurthe-et-Moselle was created in 1871 at the end of the Franco-Prussian War from the parts of the former departments of Moselle and Meurthe which remained French territory. The current boundary between Meurthe-et-Moselle and Moselle was the border between France and Germany from 1871 to 1919.

The economy was highly dependent on mining until the 1960s. There are iron, salt, and lime extraction sites.
The urban area around Nancy has a very dynamic economy based largely on services, research, and higher education.
Nancy: Nancy is a city in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in north-eastern France, and formerly the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, and then the French province of the same name.
The city is the head of the department. The metropolitan area of Nancy had a population of 410,509 inhabitants at the 1999 census, 103,602 of whom lived in the city of Nancy proper (105,100 inhabitants in the city proper as of 2004 estimates).
